In case of academic mobility, a minimum of 15 ECTS credits must be completed at the host institution. After the completion of the exchange semester you are able to request a credit transfer procedure during which the completed subjects will be reviewed. If the content of a subject completed at the host institution is at least 75% identical to the content of a matching subject of BBU, the credits earned will be accepted.

Accommodation & spending

The cost of living for a student in Hungary is approximately 500-600 EUR / month.This sum covers accommodation (a room in a dorm or shared flat), meals, public transportation, and possibly a few extra costs (movie, theatre, concert, etc.).  Actual expenditures will vary depending on individual spending habits.

Financial information

To set up a bank account in Budapest as a student, you’ll typically need your passport or ID, residence permit, address card, proof of enrolment from your university. Visit a bank branch, fill out an application, and provide these documents for verification.

Students in Budapest can enjoy various discounts on public transportation, museum tickets, cinema tickets, and at some restaurants and shops. Make sure to carry your student ID card to avail these discounts.

To budget effectively, track your monthly expenses, prioritise essential spending such as rent and groceries, and take advantage of student discounts. There are also budgeting apps that can help you manage your finances efficiently. Health & safety

Medications — such as painkillers, remedies for fever and cramps — can be purchased without prescriptions; however, most medicines can only be bought on prescription, including emergency contraception pills. You can buy medicine that doesn’t require a prescription at every pharmacy. If you need to get a prescription drug you need to take a medical examination first.

BBU provides an opportunity for students to seek mental health counselling if they have a personal problem, have learning difficulties, or if their mental health requires it. The counselling is free of charge. If you would like to talk through your difficulties with someone and find a solution to your problem, contact our counsellors by e-mail. When applying, send your Neptun ID to the counsellor, and describe in a few sentences what kind of problem or difficulty you would like to consult, so it will be easier to prepare for your first meeting.

Anyone residing or traveling in Hungary, regardless of citizenship status, can call for an ambulance if she or he needs emergency medical care or is in contact with anyone who does.The direct toll-free number for the Ambulance Service emergency dispatch is 104. Your call will automatically be routed to the nearest emergency dispatch centre.The European standardized emergency line, 112, is also functional with greater language interpretation possibilities. Your call to one of two emergency dispatch centres operated by the police will then be forwarded to the Ambulance Service. You can also go to the nearest hospital’s emergency department. If you have a TAJ card, make sure to bring it with you to the hospital.

Policies & procedures

If you lose your passport or residence permit while studying at Budapest Business University, follow these steps:

1. Report the Loss:

  • Local Police: Immediately report the loss or theft to the local police. Obtain a police report, as it will be required for the replacement process.
  • Your Embassy/Consulate: Contact your home country’s embassy or consulate in Hungary to report the loss and seek assistance.

2. Obtain a New Passport:

  • Apply for Replacement: Submit an application for a new passport at your home country’s embassy or consulate. Requirements may vary, but you will generally need to provide:
    • The police report
    • Proof of identity (e.g., a copy of your lost passport, national ID, or birth certificate).
    • Passport-sized photo
    • Application fee
  • Processing Time: Be aware that processing time for a new passport can vary. In urgent cases, ask if an emergency passport or temporary travel document can be issued.

3. Replace your residence permit:

  • Notify the Immigration Office: Inform the Hungarian immigration authorities about the loss of your residence permit.
  • Gather Required Documents: Prepare the necessary documents to apply for the replacement of your permit, which may include:
    • Police report
    • New passport
    • Proof of enrollment at Budapest Business University
    • Proof of sufficient financial means
    • Health insurance
    • Passport-sized photo
  • Submit Application: Submit your application for the replacement of your permit via the EnterHungary website. Pay any applicable fees.

4. Inform Your University:

  •  Notify Administration: Inform the international student office or the relevant administrative department at Budapest Business University about the loss. They can provide guidance and support throughout the replacement process.

5. Stay Informed:

  • Follow Updates: Stay in contact with your embassy/consulate and the Immigration Office to receive updates on the status of your new passport and/or permit.
  • Keep Copies: Once you receive your new passport and/or permit, make copies and store them in a safe place. Keep digital copies on a secure cloud service for easy access if needed.

Taking prompt action to replace your lost passport and/or permit will help minimize disruptions to your studies and ensure you remain in compliance with immigration regulations.

Depending on your citizenship, there are different rights and obligations.​
If you are a student coming from an EEA state (member states of the EU and Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and Lichtenstein), there is no limitation regarding the working hours and you need to hold a registration card.
If you are a citizen of a country that is not part of the European Economic Area (non-EEA state), you can be employed during your studies with a residence permit for study purposes and work 30 hours a week during your study period, or 90 days or 66 working days outside your study period.

If your residence permit is about to expire and your new permit hasn’t been issued yet, make sure to contact the immigration office (National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing) immediately. It’s important to provide them with proof that you have applied for an extension and ask for guidance on your next steps. If you have any doubts or questions to clarify related to the extension process, feel free to turn to the colleagues of the International and Mobility Office.

As a student, you can work 30 hours per week. We do suggest finding a good balance of studying and working. To find part-time job opportunities in Budapest, consider using LinkedIn for professional networking, connecting with local professionals, and searching for job postings or simply join such groups on social media. Networking within your university community can also be valuable; student offices also provide information on student agencies and job opportunities tailored to students. These agencies specialize in matching students with part-time work opportunities that fit their schedules and skills. BBU also organises job fairs on an annual basis. BBU has a dedicated portal which not only connects students and companies allowing students to browse job offers and internship opportunities but it is also the page where you will be able to manage the mandatory internship.
